What is the tension headache?

The tension headache is the most universal complaint of pain is headache pain and the most common type of headache, followed by migraines and cluster headaches, respectively.

What is the source of tension headache pain?

Tension headaches are caused by sustained/disrupted contraction of muscles - which in turn causes diminished blood flow through the muscular arteries. What does a tension headache feel like?

But while stress and tension may help to trigger a headache, the word 'tension' in 'tension headache' does not refer to an emotional condition, but rather to the muscle-contraction, or spasm, of muscle.

How long do tension headaches last for?

Typically, tension induced headaches last for a few hours. Sometimes, however, even a good night's sleep won't make the headache go away. In some cases, tension headaches can keep occurring for months.

Rest, sleep, and relaxation are helpful in the reduction of tension headache symptoms, but not possible or practical solutions when pain strikes in the middle of work or recreation. The most common self-prescribed treatments for tension headaches is over the counter drugs - such as analgesics (usually aspirin), anti-histamines, eye drops or tranquilizers. Drugs are not only costly but are potentially habit-forming, and may have dangerous side effects for headache sufferers.

To reduce the pain massage and acupressure have been used effectively to treat tension headaches for centuries. Massage does strengthen and tone the muscles and is effective in creating an overall feeling of physical well-being. Although the theory behind these tension relieving techniques is accepted and proven, a trained professional is usually required to effectively reduce the headache.

How can you prevent tension headaches?

Since tension headaches can keep reoccurring and prolonged use of medication can lead to dangerous side-effects, prevention is a priority in the prevention of tension headaches.

Tension headaches are an automatic response to stress, anxiety or conflict. It is important to find and eliminate the source of these conflicts. Meditation and/or mind exercises are great for improving concentration and bringing you calm and relaxation. Sleep, rest and relaxation are indeed the ideal solutions for tension headaches but, unfortunately, the least practical ones in today's fast paced society.
